In 2005 a company purchased MySpace for close to 580 million dollars; just 6 years later it was resold at a price nearly 35 million dollars. In those painful 6 years, Facebook astonishingly acquired the spotlight and became the social media giant it is today. There is much speculation as to why MySpace failed, even with its enormous head start; personally I believe it is because they sold out.
What made Facebook great was the exclusivity, and cleanliness of the program. While MySpace had loud profile pages, Facebook was simply blue and white. Instead of being bombarded by advertisements on MySpace, users could choose what to read and see on Facebook.
